NEWS/BLOG

December 2011

What an eventful year this has been! I have so much to be grateful for, and in the spirit of the season, I would just like to wish everyone Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays.

I look forward to having another great year with lots of music to share. I recently got to perform, as part of a concert at a friend of mine's recording studio. I played mandolin. It was a very last-minute performance, but some of the artists on the bill included: Chuck Negron formerly the lead vocalist of the band "Three Dog Knight". Also guitar virtuoso Laurence Juber performed some absolutely beautiful finger-style guitar.

Here are two performance excerpts from the show: “Away in a Manger” featuring Heather Youmans:

I've also still been working on the weekly blog entitled, "Lick of the Week". I have been consistently posting guitar related videos every week for over a year now. Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/jonmaclennan

Some other new news is that that the "Marley and Me II” CD is now out on iTunes. http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/marley-me-the-puppy-years/id459618810?uo=4 Thank you everyone again for your support of my music! I hope to see you soon at a concert, and also I hopeto keep in touch online as well in 2012!

October 2011

Here it is the last song off the "Dreams" album to be released! It is called "Until the End".I hope you enjoy the music, this album was a ton of work and really turned out to be a beautiful photograph of a period of time in my life.

If you want to support my art and help keep the music going purchase some of the tracks on iTunes or write a review that would be cool.

August 2011

Greetings! I hope that your summer has been going excellent. I know for me the time has been flying by. As we head towards the fall I wanted to let you know about a couple new things happening over here.

First of all I just created a new video blog, in which the main subject is to send out a huge thank you to everyone who supports all the music related things I am involved with online. Also to the people that actually buy my records and tracks despite them being up online on my own website for free downloads. I am so thankful to be able to interact with people all over the world through commenting and emails. Lately the messages I have been receiving have been so inspiring and exciting. I want everyone to know I’M JUST GETTING STARTED!

Next up is that I received word that my song off the “Dreams” album “Fallin’ Deeper” was picked up for the new Twentieth Century Fox Film Marley and Me II: The Puppy Years movie soundtrack. This is awesome news and I am really excited to be attending the movie premier red carpet. The Marley and Me II soundtrack will also be on iTunes as well!

Another project that I have been working on , is an online musical collaboration and artist-profiling concept. I am excited to announce that my YouTube channel is currently at over 1,000,000 cumulative views on my videos. Which include anything from my own musical performances, shows, guitar lessons, to a guitar lick of the week blog. The other idea I have been pursuing is that I have been so blessed to personal know and hang with some of the finest musicians in town. So I have been getting together with these musicians and interviewing them asking them questions about their careers, and what kind of advice they can give to the up and coming younger musicians, with intent to make the interviews and lessons educational as well.

That’s all for now. Hope to talk to you soon!!

May 2011

I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful spring weather! I am really excited to finally announce my new record “Dreams” is completely finished! It has been a long process with tons of work that I have been trying to somewhat document via online video blogs on Youtube. However, there was so much more that went into the project that could not all be captured by myself in the vlogs, but hopefully they can give everyone a little glimpse into the record making process and also show the good time me and my musician friends had making the record!

On this album as opposed to my previous “Suspicious Love” (2006), I ended up doing a lot more of the engineering and recording myself which was a huge learning experience, aside from mixing, for the most part I cut the whole record in my home studio which I have been building for the past 12 years.

Wow it has been over 5 years now that I have been giving my music away on the Internet for FREE. I started doing it immediately after Radiohead in contrary to a lot of indie artists out there who would never let go of their babies! So here is what I plan to do for the “Dreams” album. The music is currently available to purchase on iTunes, and you can also download the first track off the album for free at Music. However, if you want the whole album immediately you’ve got to get it on iTunes. If you want it for FREE every 2 weeks I will be releasing a new song for FREE download(s) on my site.

I would really appreciate the support, if you got it off iTunes, or if you just want to download it all for free you can donate too with just a credit card at Music. One thing I feel so extraordinarily blessed about is the great people surrounding me that were involved in this record. It would be nowhere near as good with out their help: Luke Tozour, Roland Gajate Garcia, Leon Ledoux, Tim Pierce, My Family, Sam Hwang, Lucy Xing, Carl Verheyen, and Bob Lanzner.

Until soon!

March 2011

Here are some new studio video blogs for the "Dreams" record which will be released early Spring 2011. Here I am with grammy nominated producer Luke Tozour.

January 2011

Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone who helped make 2010 a great success. I am just a couple vocals away from mixing the new record, and I am really excited to share the new songs! I also just did some work playing Ukulele for Fox's hit television show "Raising Hope".

December 2010

     Happy Holidays to everyone.

I am hard at work again in the studio working on a new record, working on what I feel is some of the best material I have ever written. I already know I am going to be very proud of the musical outcome. I am excited to be working with the same awesome producer Luke Tozour, who is currently up for a Grammy this year “Album of the Year” for Katy Perry. I cannot wait for everyone to hear the new record! I just finished a percussion session with Roland Gajate Garcia check out the video blog below, he played shekere, bombo, shakers, djembe, tambourine, and all kinds of percussion.

August 2010

Wow this year is really moving, as they say time flies when you’re having fun!

I just wanted to fill you all in on the latest of what I have been up too. I am excited to say that the album I was privileged to sing on with British pop-star Jamie Cullum is now a Gold record in Germany! It is my first Gold record to be a part of, and hopefully there will be more to come in the future. A funny footnote to that, my next-door neighbor is a world-class viola player, and ever since I was a kid I would think, man I wish I could work on a record with her.

She used to tell me stories when I was little about her day, which typically consisted of recording with Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton or some other bona fide musical legend as she watered her garden. Anyways to make a long story short she is on the Cullum record as well. Although the string section dates where done at different times, we are finally on a project together!

I am stoked to announce in June I graduated UCLA with a B.A. in Jazz Guitar Studies, also received a really cool award for “Jazz Excellence” from Kenny Burrell, which I framed and hung in my studio!

Want more FREE music?? Here is the deal: So many of the now-a-day pop records are heavily produced and sculpted until they are these flawless and sometimes lifeless musical endeavors. So I’m going the complete opposite direction and posting tracks from a live performance that is far from polished. In fact it’s a CD burn coming straight out of the main mix of a cheap live soundboard. The guitars are raw, the mic feeds back, and the vocals out of tune, but it’s real, and I’m proud of these organic performances! So check it out available now for FREE DOWNLOADS are live cuts of “Footsteps in the Sand”, “Dreams” and “Christmas Day” live April 2, 2010 at UCLA. Featuring:

Vocals - Kanami Shimanuki
Bass - Ryan Mahlstedt
Drums - Leon Ledoux
Percussion - Roland Gajate Garcia
Piano - Julian Le

Wow this year has been excellent so far! I have been gigging down in San Diego performing with Ruby Summer again doing acoustic shows. They have been great, and have written a bunch of new material as well. (see videos below)

In January I shot a music video with a new artist named Heather Youmans, it was for her single “Girl To Change Your World”, which is on Indie Billboard. Check out the videos below.

Crazy how I am coming to the end of another quarter now at UCLA, it is week 9 of 10. I am absolutely baffled that in about 10 more weeks I will be graduating college!

Also, I am very happy to announce a show I am putting together for my senior recital. It is going to feature a blend of different repertoire including jazz standards, and my original music.
