Myth #1

“I need to have faster fingers to play solos.”

One time I was sitting down with Kenny Burrell one of the fastest, greatest blues soloists that’s ever walked the earth. He said these exact words to me, “Jon, it’s not how fast you play…” 

Then he told me about a guy who could play anything, he had the fastest fingers Kenny had ever seen. But he couldn’t make music with them…

Then he told me about how his good friend B.B. King had slower fingers. Yet still played beautifully and melodically. 

He said having speed can actually hold you back. If your fingers are fast, you may tend to default to common patterns you’ve worked out and played many times. Instead of finding the notes in your heart and letting those ones come out. Bottom line, speed can be a crutch.

Many famous players (like B.B. King) have shown us that there is a way to play beautiful melodic solos without having fast fingers. And when you take this approach you’ll actually find it’s one of the most satisfying ways to play.

Myth #2

“I can learn this on my own!”

Sure students often think, “Everything is already out there for free ​online…” 

But these are often the same students who get stuck on the ​“rhythm plateau”. They say things like “I lack focus” or “I don’t have ​structure.”
